What is ALS? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. These generous and compassionate donors give to The ALS Association to aid people with ALS and their families to help improve their quality of life. Additionally they support the scientific and medical research programs that are underway as they search for a cure for this debilitating disease. The ALS Association direct mail donors are proven prospects for a wide variety of philanthropic causes including: medical research, humanitarian, children’s, international relief, and more. Additionally these donors who give on average $32.00 are excellent targets for commercial offers including magazine subscriptions, books, general merchandise, gift, and health catalogs.
